THE LIBRARY
With locations in historic Hillsborough, serene Cedar Grove and quirky Carrboro, the Orange County Public Library is a small system with an epic reach. We give free library cards to residents of 6 counties, employees of 3 local governments, 2 school systems, 1 community college and the nation's first public university. We're fiercely friendly and forward-thinking. And nothing makes us happier than helping someone find the book or information they want, seeing a child soak up storytime, watching a teenager develop leadership skills through participating in our Teen Advisory Board, or teaching an older adult how to use their new cell phone.

BEING A BRANCH MANAGER
Working at Orange County Public Library provides opportunities for creativity, innovation and personal achievement. The Branch Manager is a coach, mentor and guide with proven skills in leading people, managing programs and stewarding resources.

The incumbent is responsible for the administration of the branch. Under the immediate direction of the Assistant Director or Library Director, they plan, direct and assess the activities and operations of the branch and ensure completion of library-wide goals. They also coordinate activities with other library services and with our partners; participate in development of system-wide plans, policies and procedures; provide training, supervision, mentoring and leadership to the main branch division supervisors and staff; and model excellent interpersonal and customer-oriented behaviors.

SALARY

Supervises division supervisors and coordinates their operations;

Provides leadership and guidance to staff; develops and evaluates standards and practices for the delivery of quality service and empowers staff to deliver effective, high quality service to patrons;

Works with administration to establish short and long-range goals, objectives, strategic plans and priorities; keeps staff apprised of goals and status;

Participates in the development of the branch budget; authorizes and monitors expenditures for assigned divisions within the branch;

Assists in the recruitment, interview and selection processes for new-hires;

Works to shape and enhance the role of the library as a neighborhood center;

Evaluates the effectiveness of services and programs; uses data to make informed decisions and recommendations for service and program standards and delivery;

Addresses difficult or irate patrons effectively;

Participates in the development of system-wide plans, policies and procedures;

Oversees the Main Library branch building and grounds, and reports necessary repairs and servicing;

Adheres to the department's safety rules and regulations;

Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments;

May perform other incidental tasks, as needed.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Through modeling and leadership employee has the ability to foster team-work, flexibility and excellent customer service among staff thus promoting a positive library image to the community and patrons;

Good knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including modern office technology;

Must stay up-to-date with Library technology trends and tools;

Must be committed to the development of high quality and high impact public library services which promote individual community success;

Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing;

Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with County employees and the general public;

Ability to supervise, plan and coordinate staff and ensure completion of assigned tasks;

Ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software;

Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, resourcefulness, accuracy, thoroughness and the physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university with five (5) years of professional level library work experience working in a public library demonstrating leadership and/or management of projects and three (3) years of demonstrated progressively responsible supervisory experience; and

NC Public Librarian from State Library; and

Fluency in the Spanish language preferred but not required; and

Valid North Carolina Driver License.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND POSSIBLE HAZARDS
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of standing, sitting, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, handling and repetitive motions of the hands and wrists;

Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;

Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures; operate a computer terminal; visual inspection of parts; fabrication or assembly; and perform extensive reading;

Worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
