NCLA
SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT
JANUARY 31, 2003
The NCLA Scholarship Committee will continue to assist the NC Association of School Librarians with the processing of its Appalachian Scholarship. The current balances for this scholarship as well as that of the Query-Long Memorial are insufficient to make an award during the 2003 calendar year. Only the NCLA scholarship has funds available equal to the award amount ($750) of the scholarship given during 2002. Awarding that amount would however deplete the funds available for many years. These circumstances are illustrative of the need for additional fund raising by our association.
Due to weather problems, plans for committee meetings have been canceled twice this winter before I could even complete them. However, as chairperson it is my recommendation to the Scholarship Committee and to the Executive Board that neither the Appalachian Scholarship, the NCLA Scholarship, nor the Query-Long Memorial Scholarship be awarded during 2003 (unless significant funds are added miraculously to the current balances.) The McLendon Loan account has over $1700 available. However, in as much as no one was interested in applying for loans from this account during 2002, I am also recommending that no applications be considered for 2003. The committee awaits the pleasure of the Executive Board.
The Scholarship Committee will post appropriate announcements on the NCLA web page and with the North Carolina library schools.
