NCLA EXECUTIVE BOARD - JULY 19, 2002
SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT

Early in June committee membership was rounded out with the addition of Harry Cooke, Director of Libraries at Gaston College.

The June issue of NCLA E-News contained a brief announcement regarding the reduced  financial support available this year for the scholarships.    Regrettably there were only four complete applications for the scholarships.  No one applied for the McLendon Student Loan.  Nevertheless the decisions of the committee members were not made any easier by this limited number since the caliber of the submissions was extremely high.  With the posting of the revised web page for NCLA the information concerning restrictions on the Appalachian Scholarship for a student who will work as a school library media coordinator in North Carolina was received in time for action by the Scholarship Committee.

Pending the final verification of candidate’s enrollment in a graduate library school program, the scholarships will be awarded as follows:

Appalachian Scholarship for $1000 -  Donna H. Holland of White Lake.  She is currently working as a media coordinator with the Bladen Middle School in Elizabethtown.  She is attending East Carolina University.

NCLA Memorial Scholarship for $750 - Miranda Cude-Grindstaff of Winston-Salem, who plans to enter UNC - Greensboro in August.  She has worked in the Forsyth County Public Library system.

Until the validation of their enrollment for the fall semester has been satisfied, no public announcement of these awards will be made.

We are planning to meet before the next Executive Board meeting to address issues of funding for the scholarship program, frequency of awarding the scholarships/loan, publicity ideas, and the selection of a vice-chair.

Respectively submitted,

Sue D. Williams

Chair, NCLA Scholarship Committee
