Roundtable on the Status of Women in Librarianship
October 18, 2002
The Roundtable
on the Status of Women in Librarianship offered a successful workshop on September
27th in Winston-Salem. Dr. Arabelle Fedora delivered a program on "Effective
Presentations to 1 or 1,000" to a gathering of public and academic librarians.
The RTSWL is proceeding with plans to issue an award at the 2003 conference
for recognizing a professional librarian in North Carolina who has provided
outstanding leadership and service in furthering the status of women in librarianship,
the mission of the library in the community, and/or the support of women colleagues
in the workplace. This award will be named in honor of Dr. Marilyn Miller.
Winners will receive a plaque and a cash award (funded by the RTSWL.) Award
criteria will be established early 2003 and sent to the membership since this
will necessitate a change in by-laws. A call for nominations will go out in
May 2003 with an August 1 deadline. The RTSWL Executive Committee and at least
one person from the RTSWL membership will select a winner from the nominations
based on the criteria met; and the award will then be announced at the Fall
conference. The NCLA Executive Board will remember that approval for proceeding
with these plans was given
at the January 2001 NCLA Executive Board meeting (provided the RTSWL did not
seek outside donors for the cash award). The RTSWL requests a time slot during
the opening session at the 2003 conference to announce the award and seeks
confirmation of this request from the NCLA Executive Board. The next RTSWL
Executive Committee meeting is set for November 1, 2002 in Winston-Salem.
