11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 5th, 2007

Davie County Public Library, Mocksville, NC

Attendees:    Joline Ezzell, Jonathan Farlow, Ted Labosky, Janie Neely, Rhonda Pinkney, Mark Schumacher, and Jeanie Welch.

Minutes and Treasurer’s Report:

·        The minutes of November 6th, 2006 were approved as posted.

·        The Treasurer’s Report was approved.

Meeting notes:  Jonathan reported on the NCLA Executive Board meeting. The agenda and minutes are posted on the Internet. There was a 3% rise in NCLA membership and $13,000 net income. NCLA wants conference plans by mid March. RASS representative to the NCLA Conference Planning Committee Mark Schumacher has not heard from the committee.

Old Business:

v      Ted Labosky will be the interim Vice Chair until the election when Jonathan Farlow will become Chair. The Community College position will remain open until the Board Election.

v      The ballot will include a vote to alter the Secretary/Treasurer’s position so that one of the At Large members will act as RASS treasurer. We will work on the wording.

v      Conference workshop topics with most promise were marketing and training.

v      For Marketing, an idea is to have a round table type program where people share ideas and successes.

v      Joline did a literature search on Training with few results. Jeanie suggested we get the perspective of someone newly hired. Joline said a person at UNC Law would help with this workshop. Main topics to cover would be "What new employees need to know and how best to provide it" and "Evaluation of training."

·        We would like to include a Public Library trainer and an Academic Library trainer and trainee. A UNC-G or Duke Reference Intern could speak and a Library School graduate who is a former Intern. Jeanie and Mark Schumacher know of several people who might be willing to help with the program. Rhonda and Jonathan will contact possible Public Library trainers. Raye Oldham at the State Library might help us find presenters.

·        Other ideas for this program: Handouts of the State Competencies and Handouts of RUSA Behavioral Guidelines for Reference service provided by Jeanie.  The formal title is: Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and Information Service Providers, Revised by MOUSS Management of Reference Committee and approved by the RUSA Board of Directors, June 2004. Jeanie can also provide UNC Charlotte Reference Dept.'s training manual. We could also have a table with training materials, especially the NC LIVE materials.

·        A double session for the Training Workshop is a possibility.

·        Jonathan agreed to act as moderator for the workshop.

v      “Known Personalities” for the annual RASS Luncheon Meeting were discussed. Jonathan will begin arrangements by calling New Hanover County Public Library about John Berendt author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, checking on Scott Simon of NPR, or contacting audiobook narrator George Guidall. The RASS Luncheon is traditionally on Thursday. Jonathan hopes to have the speaker lined up to announce at the next NCLA Executive Board Meeting on April 20th.

v      Jonathan will turn in RASS conference plans to the Vice President of NCLA.

New Business:

v      Carol Keck has resigned from the Center for Creative Leadership. The Board agreed that we can assure her that she could remain Director for Special Libraries. Jonathan will contact Carol.

v      To encourage people to join RASS, we will have a drawing from 2007 RASS New Members names for a door prize at the NCLA RASS luncheon.

v      Board members should think about nominees for the upcoming RASS Board ballot. Open positions for which we need nominees are Public Libraries Director, Community College Libraries Director, and Director-at-Large.

v      The next meeting will be Monday, May 7th at 11a.m. at the Davie County Public Library in Mocksville.

Respectfully submitted,
