NCLA Leadership Institute

The NCLA Leadership Institute is a most significant and memorable learning experience for individuals who lead or hope to lead North Carolina’s libraries. Past Institutes have featured professionally designed learning experiences for current and future library leaders in North Carolina.

The next Leadership Institute is being planned for 2012.

The Institute was a turning point for me; it was there that I decided to pursue my PhD — which hopefully I'll finish before I die! — Robin Boltz, NBCT Library Teacher South Granville High School

I was grateful for the time to spend thinking about issues with other librarians from diverse backgrounds and work situations.  I thought the role-playing was especially helpful. — Irene Laube, Durham Technical Community College

The NCLA Leadership Institute raised my awareness of how I interacted with others and changed my life for the better. — Lauren Corbett, Head of Acquisitions Emory University Woodruff Library

The Leadership Institute continues to be beneficial to my career. I do not think I would have moved directly into Management positions without that on my resume. The experience was value added learning which enhanced coursework of the masters program giving me real life leadership skills, mentoring and fellowship. It is well worth the time and money. I am glad I had the experience and opportunity. — Susan Benning, Head Librarian May Memorial Public Library Alamance County Public Libraries

I found my experience at the NCLA Leadership Institute very rewarding. The Leadership Institute both reinforced and enhanced my skills as a manager and administrator. By reinforcing the skills that I have already developed, the institute strengthened my knowledge that I’m evolving successfully as a manager and administrator, but it also gave me new strategies to continue my growth both personally and professionally. — Sandra Lovely, Interim Regional Manager North Regional Library Durham County Library

I have always served as a supervisor for the Wake County Library System, last year I moved up the ranks to departmental manager. I cannot tell you how much I have reflected on the training I received at the Institute and Wake County. Leadership is certainly challenging but rewarding. — Brandy Hamilton, Readers' Services Manager, Southeast Regional Library

The NCLA Leadership Institute helped me develop an approach to planning and assessment that involves library staff in setting goals and assessing our success in meeting those goals. — Kathy Winslow, Director of the Library NC Wesleyan College

I learned so much about group dynamics at the Leadership Institute. I met many colleagues who I have great respect for and have enjoyed working with over the years.   Our experience together in the leadership institute was a real bonding experience. — Sue Ann Cody, Associate University Librarian for Public Services Randall Library, UNCW

The Leadership Institute taught me general leadership skills that I was able to apply to my everyday work and the support from the facilitators and the other attendees allowed me to pursue a different type of library position.Julie Raynor, Business Research Supervisor High Point Public Library
