The PLS planning board met at the New Hanover County Public Library on July 30, 2004, and at the Davidson County Public Library on September 24, 2004. Dates were established for the 2005 Planning board meetings.
There was much discussion at both meetings regarding programs, and co-sponsorship
of programs for the upcoming conference. There are three preconferences
to be sponsored by PLS, the annual PLS Luncheon in which the Bill Roberts
award will be presented, and a
total of eight other programs. The council applied for and received a grant
for our PLS luncheon speaking Daniel Wallace. The council approved the official
name for the Roberts award as the William H. Roberts Public Library Distinguished
Service Award. Nominations for the Bill Roberts award were due in to the
committee by October 1, 2004, with the award committee meeting on October
8, 2004 for review and selection.
Expenditures were approved for a plaque for the winner and a permanent plaque
(to which the winners name will be added) to be housed in the Forsyth County
Public Library.
Committees gave reports of activities and meetings. The Branch Managers’ Network committee sponsored a fall workshop on September 24, 2004 in Salisbury entitled “Points of View: Both Sides of the Circ Desk”. There were 54 attendees at this workshop. This committee hopes to repeat this workshop closer to the eastern end of N.C. There was much discussion among the council on the purpose of committees and how should they function. The council will be discussing these issues at the next meeting.
The planning board will meet again on February 25, 2005 at the Chapel Hill Public Library.
