NCLA OPERATIONS COMMITTEE
REPORT TO THE EXECUTIVE BOARD
JULY 19, 2002

Members of the Operations Committee agreed on specifications and purchased a new Dell Inspiron laptop computer for the NCLA office. Bao-Chu Chang and Diane Kester got a special education rate on the computer and also the education rate on MS Office XP Professional. The price came in at $2569. The leased computer was purchased for $363.91 for the use of the NCLA treasurer. If needed, a laser printer will be purchased later.

Cathy Rocco, who had served as interim administrative assistant since March 11, requested that the committee replace her by the end of June. The position was advertised in the June 2 News and Observer, as well as on the NCLA list serve, NCLA web site, and State Library job line. We received 20 applications. Applicants were required to submit the PD 107 State Employment Application.

Four candidates were interviewed on June 28 at the NCLA office on Capital Blvd. in Raleigh. Ross Holt, Diane Kester, Martha Davis, Bao-Chu Chang, and Irene Laube were present for the interviews. Following a reference check, the position was offered to Caroline Walters. Caroline started work on July 15. She has seven years of experience in managing databases at UNC, where she worked full-time while completing her BA in history at N.C. State Univ. She will begin evening classes in the master's program in public history at N.C. State Univ. in August. She is interested in archival management and looks forward to working with NCLA.

Cathy has been keeping current with renewal notices and mailings. In cleaning up the files, she noticed the name of a mailing company. It turned out that NCLA had used the company until 2000. The company is very close to the office and actually comes over to pick up the mailings. Cathy has been very pleased with their service.

Mary Brake from the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped offered to run the library's network cable to the NCLA office so that the office can have a faster network connection. She plans to install the cable the week of July 15.
