  • NC Wise Owl - a state initiative to provide basic reference tools to all NC public school students. Includes Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia Online, DISCovering Authors, and Infotrac. Free! 
  • NC LIVE - available free to students and teachers with public library cards. An extensive online database of all kinds of reference material, including World Book, the World Almanac, and much, much more. Password required (may be obtained from your local public library).

  • LION: Librarians Information Online Network (www.libertynet.org/lion/lion.html) - comprehensive site designed for K-12 school librarians; good links to all kinds of stuff on topics like copyright, facilities, PR, lesson planning, cataloging, professional resources, etc. 
  • LM_NET on the Web (ericir.syr.edu/lm_net) - information on how to subscribe to the discussion list of choice for school librarians, plus a searchable archive and useful links. 
  • Peter Milbury's School Librarian Web Pages (wombat.cusd.chico.k12.ca.us/~pmilbury/lib.html) - links to web pages created and/or maintained by school librarians, some personal, some for their schools or organizations, some about curriculum matters. 
  • The Internet Public Library (www.ipl.org) - the Teen and Youth sections are terrific! Information on authors, books, issues, etc. 
  • Yahoo! Reference: Libraries (dir.yahoo.com/Reference/Libraries/) - links organized by type of library or topics like employment, conferences, literature, etc. School library section has links for organizations, resources, and other valuable sites. 
  • NC Employment Opportunities (statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/jobs/jobs.htm) - professional library positions available in NC. 
  • Troops to Teachers (troops.org) - a searchable database of job openings, including library positions, at schools around the country. 
  • Library JobSearch, U. of Illinois (carousel.lis.uiuc.edu/~jobs) - lists jobs from all around the country, and even the world; usually has media specialist postings; includes links to other job lists. 
  • The Copyright Website (www.benedict.com) - covers the basics of copyright law; particularly useful for "edge" issues like the Internet. 
  • The UT System Crash Course in Copyright (www.utsystem.edu/OGC/IntellectualProperty/cprtindx.htm) - a primer on fair use, designed for UT but useful for K-12, with good material for the digital age.

  • Education World (www.education-world.com) - a searchable Internet database just for education. 
  • Classroom Connect (www.classroom.net) - all kinds of links and information for teachers and students, including contacts with other educators. 
  • Virtual Schoolhouse (sunsite.unc.edu/cisco/schoolhouse) - "a meta-library of K-12 Internet links" on topics like art, libraries, museums, books, technology, even fun! 
  • Global Schoolhouse (www.gsh.org) - a project sponsored by Microsoft aimed at connecting kids worldwide through Internet-based learning; also has good links for teachers & students (resources, contests, directories, etc.). 
  • Teachers.Net (teachers.net) - chat rooms, lesson plans, curriculum information, contests, online workshops, and more. 
  • Teachers Helping Teachers (www.pacificnet.net/~mandel) - designed to support new and experienced teachers through mentoring and idea-sharing; includes links to education resources and a "stress reduction moment." 
  • Busy Teachers' Website K-12 (www.ceismc.gatech.edu/busyt) - links organized by topics or area of interest, from art to math to guidance to technology. 
  • Web66 (web66.umn.edu) - "oldest and most complete" listing of schools on the Web, plus information on how to set up a web server.

  • ICONnect (www.ala.org/ICONN) - an AASL technology initiative, designed to give media specialists, teachers, & students the skills necessary for using & integrating the Internet in the classroom. 
  • Apple (www.apple.com) - tech help and resources for Mac users. 
  • Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) - the same for Windows users. 
  • HyperStudio (www.hyperstudio.com) - stuff to download and tips for posting stacks online, plus links to "hyperfriends." 
  • Photoshare (multimedia.ocps.k12.fl.us/photoshare) - a FREE archive of pictures you can use in multimedia projects.
