The NCLA Literacy Roundtable has not met since the last NCLA Board Meeting in October. However, Roundtable members communicated frequently via email in order to prepare for the Centennial Conference. Several Literacy Roundtable Members participated in the NCLA Centennial Conference held at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, NC, November 9-12, 2004.
The Literacy Roundtable participated in the Conference by sponsoring two sessions and by hosting a booth focused on literacy programs:
1) “Literacy and Libraries: A Splendid Combination.” Past-chair Mark Pumphrey and current Chair Gale Greenlee presented and the session featured ESOL programs with Polk County Public Library and the Glenwood Branch of the Greensboro Public Library. Twenty-five people attended the session.
2) Roundtable members Ralph Kaplan and Mary Sideow gave a presentation on LINKS (the Literacy Information aNd Communication System)--an online information and communications network for adult and family literacy. Approximately 15 people attended the session.
3) Thanks to funding from a NCLA Special Projects Grant, the NCLA Literacy Roundtable was able to host an educational booth in the exhibitor’s hall. Roundtable members used the booth as an opportunity to introduce conference attendees to the Roundtable and issues pertaining to literacy.
The next meeting of the Literacy Roundtable has yet to be determined.
