The NCLA Literacy Roundtable has met twice since the NCLA’s 2003
biennial conference in Winston-Salem. The Roundtable met October 9 at the
Archdale Public Library and on December 3 at the Lee County Library in
Sanford.
Agenda items discussed at the two meetings included the following:
- During the October 9th meeting, Emily Castleberry and Pam Hines from UNC-TV gave a presentation about UNC-TV’s literacy programming. They also distributed packets containing program information and resources for libraries.
- Roundtable members reviewed evaluations from the literacy luncheon program held during NCLA’s biennial conference. The program featured Dr. Dale Lipschutz, Literacy Officer in ALA’s Office for Literacy and Outreach Services. Members also discussed the second conference program sponsored by the Roundtable, titled “ESL @ the Library: Enriching Lives.”
- Members worked on the NCLA project grant report which provided funding assistance for literacy activities during the biennial conference. The final report was submitted to Catherine Wilkinson (then NCLA Finance Committee Chair) by NCLA Literacy Roundtable Secretary Trish Bean prior to the December 3rd meeting.
- Members discussed participation in the following conferences:
- Annual conference in Orlando. A Literacy 360 program is scheduled for June 28 and members of the Roundtable who will attend the conference will participate in the session. Details will be discussed during the February meeting of the Roundtable.
- NCLA-SELA Conference in November.
- The Librarian’s Association at UNC-CH will hold its annual conference on March 15th. Members of the Roundtable were invited to attend.
- The Roundtable spent a great deal of time discussing the need to define our focus. A questionnaire was sent via email to get feedback from members. The Roundtable discussed what role we might play in future workshops, conducting training, providing resources for other library-based literacy programs and activities. Other members will be polled and the Roundtable will continue to refine its area of emphasis during the next meeting.
- Members also discussed the need to recruit others to join the Roundtable. Trish Bean received an updated membership list from Caroline Walters. All members are invited to the upcoming meeting and minutes from the December 3rd meeting were sent to members as well. The Roundtable is also investigating the possibility of establishing a discussion list for members.
The next meeting of the NCLA Literacy Roundtable will be February 11, 2004, 10 a.m. at the State Library in Raleigh, NC.
