NCLA Literacy Committee Report to the NCLA Board
Meeting of April 25, 2003
Meredith College, Raleigh

The committee held a luncheon meeting at the Saratoga Restaurant in Hillsborough on Friday, February 21, 2003.
Highlights of the meeting follow:

Mr. Pumphrey gave a final report of the committee's October 4, 2002 workshop on "ESL @ TheLibrary.org" and mentioned the request following the workshop by those attending for the establishment of an ESL and Libraries list serv. Because of the burden maintenance of such a list serv would impose, this idea was tabled.

Discussion of possible conference programs followed. It was decided that we would apply to NCLA to sponsor two programs: one luncheon speaker and one other program. Trish Bean and Mary Siedow volunteered to work on the application form for conference programs, and to report on progress made at our next committee meeting.

Chairperson Pumphrey introduced discussion of the possibility of the committee sponsoring an NCLA Literacy Award to be announced at the NCLA Biennial Conference. Committee members responded favorably to the establishment of such an award. Committee members Betty Meehan-Black and Anne Marie Elkins volunteered to draw up some draft criteria for the award, to be discussed at our next committee meeting. NCLA approval of the new association-wide award will also be sought.

Chairperson Pumphrey reviewed the requested committee budget for 2003 and the amount approved by the NCLA Finance Committee ($300 for publications). He mentioned a discussion with NCLA President Ross Holt regarding the fact that NCLA intends to support conference programs to some degree later in the year, after proposals are received, in combination with the NCLA Special Projects Grant application process. The committee will need to think about the costs to support conference programs we plan and then request the needed amount from NCLA. The committee should also consider preparing a Special Projects Grant application for this purpose.

The committee discussed the need to nominate a new chairperson for the next biennium, since Chairperson Pumphrey intends to step down at the end of the current biennium. The possibility of Co-Chairpersons was discussed, and some members said they might be willing to assume a Co-Chairperson position if a Chairperson cannot be identified for the next biennium.

The committee will meet again on April 24, 2003 at the State Library in Raleigh, just one day prior to the NCLA Board Meeting. Discussion of the committee's plan to sponsor an NCLA Literacy Award will be on the agenda of the NCLA Board Meeting scheduled for April 25, 2003.
