Report of the NCLA Literacy Committee to the NCLA Board
January 17, 2003, King, NC

The NCLA Literacy Committee has not met since the last NCLA Board Meeting. A Final Report on our October 4 workshop, "ESL@ TheLibrary.Org" was filed with the NCLA Finance Committee in early November, in compliance with the requirements of the NCLA Special Projects Grant award the committee received to support the project.

Also, Treasurer Diane Kester and Finance Committee Chairperson Catherine Wilkinson agreed to hold as a separate account within NCLA a $300 donation to support the future work of the Literacy Committee made by the Friends of the Greensboro Public Library from Lila Wallace/Reader's Digest Literacy grant funds. This action followed the suggestion of Steve Sumerford, an NCLA Literacy Committee member and project coodinator of GPL's Lila Wallace/RD literacy project.

Mr. Sumerford has also suggested that the committee consider sponsoring an biennial NCLA Literacy Award. This follows an idea expressed by the President-Elect of NCLA, Dr. Pauletta Brown Bracy. The committee will take up the biennial award idea at its next scheduled committee meeting, which will take place at noon on Friday, January 31, 2003, at the Saratoga Restaurant in Hillsborough. Mr. Sumerford plans also to inquire to the Lila Wallace/RD about the possibility of a larger donation from the Fund which would help support the literacy award for the first three years.

In addition to the proposed NCLA Literacy Award, other items on the committee's agenda for the January 31, 2003 meeting are: 1.) Nominations for Chairperson of the Committee; 2.) The committee budget request for 2003 recently submitted by the Chairperson to the NCLA Finance Committee; and 3.) Programs and speakers to consider for the NCLA Biennial Conference in October, 2003.
