The NCLA Literacy
Committee has met twice, on May 21 and July 2, at the Glenwood Branch of
the Greensboro Public Library, since the last meeting of the NCLA Executive
Board. Both committee meetings have focused on planning and preparations
for our proposed October 4 workshop to be held at the Glenwood Branch of
the Greensboro Public Library, titled "Libraries, Literacy and English
as a Second Language." Committee members have focused their attention
of identifying speakers for the workshop; developing the publicity brochure;
preparing an NCLA Special Projects Grant application we plan to submit
to the NCLA Finance Committee by August 1 to help support the workshop;
and working out the logistics of the workshop and schedule for the day.
In addition to the workshop planning, the committee has voted unanimously to
accept two new members on the committee: Gale Greenlee of Greensboro Public
Library and Trish Bean, Leslie Perry Library, Henderson. The committee also
voted regretfully to accept the resignation of a longstanding committee member,
Joyce Burgart of the Learning Place (Rockingham County Public Library), because
of a job change.
Our next committee meeting will be a luncheon meeting in Greensboro on August
27.
