The North Carolina Library Association Literacy Committee held its first meeting of the 2002-2003 Biennium on January 14, 2002, from 3:30 p.m.B5:00 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Public Library. Members present were Mark Pumphrey (Chairman), Betty Meehan-Black, Mary Siedow, and Anne-Marie Elkins. Members absent were Steve Sumerford, Jeanne Fox, and Joyce Burgart.
The Literacy Committee discussed goals for the biennium. It was decided to focus our attention on English as a Second Language programs at the 2003 Biennial Conference, and at a workshop in the Fall of 2002. Chairman Pumphrey was asked by the committee to inquire about the availability of NCLA funding of the planned program and training activities.
The next meeting of the Literacy Committee is scheduled for March 20, 2002 at the Chapel Hill Public Library. This meeting will include a review of survey documents collected on the State Library of North Carolina website which relate to the Hispanic Services Project. The committee thinks this review of this existing data will enhance our ability to select appropriate program and training topics for the proposed workshop and conference programs.
