NCLA Leadership Institute

October 26-30, 2008
The Summit at Haw River State Park, NC

Current public, academic and special library directors participating in the NCLA Institute Track II learning experience will be presented with a set of challenging exercises and assignments, including several to be completed after October 2008. Program content (and post-Institute coaching) will ask these library leaders to examine three important roles (and competencies) of visionary or transformational leadership. These roles and competencies include the library leader as:

  • “Chief Coaching Officer” (coaching the performance of direct reports to a higher level and building a high performance library leadership team)
  • “Chief Strategy Officer” (putting the experience of customers at the heart of library strategy and day-to-day operations).
  • “Chief Transformation Officer” (using insight gained from self-assessment results and Leadership Institute learning to develop and apply visionary leadership skills within their library).

Track II learning materials will provide relevant information, applied research, and practical exercises to engage participants in “spirited” discussion and objective assessment about the role, contribution, and value they can bring to their library and the communities they serve as visionary, transformational leaders. Two “hands on” learning experiences will be custom designed for Track II participants.

Track II participants will develop a personalized Senior Leadership in Action Plan. The purpose of this “action plan” is to put Track II learning to use and enhance current (and future) strategies for developing a high performance organization capable of becoming the information provider-, employer-, and investment-of-choice within the communities served by the library.

Senior Leadership in Action Plans will provide for six structured “strategic coaching tele-conferences” to be delivered after the Leadership Institute with the program facilitator over a period of 6-9 months. These 1-hour sessions will provide senior leaders with an opportunity to review implementation of Senior Leadership in Action Plans (with colleagues) and to review application of key concepts of visionary, transformational leadership. As requested, one-on-one coaching support will be provided to work on specific issues best shared confidentially with the program facilitator/external consultant.

Each Track II participant will receive a set of professionally-designed and high-quality learning materials , custom-developed and produced to facilitate knowledge retention and learning transfer.

Potential Learning Objectives:
Track II Leadership Institute participants will:
  • Develop and refine their personal Leadership Point of View.
  • Debate how the Progression of Economic Value Model can be applied to improve service and service experiences for library customers and the communities served by the library.
  • Discuss the value of placing “the customer experience” at the heart of library strategy.
  • Explore how assessments results can be utilized to develop leadership skills in the areas of coaching, strategy, and transformational change.
  • Consider factors required to develop a high performance leadership team and organization.
  • Discuss research-based models of leadership, coaching, and human performance.
  • Assess the “customer experience” delivered by a service provider and discuss implications for delivery of services and service experience within their library.
  • Develop a Senior Leadership in Action Plan for transferring learning from the Leadership Institute to the day-to-day work environment.
  • Build peer relationships with fellow library leaders engaged in strategic leadership and library organization development.
