NCLA Leadership Institute

October 26-30, 2008
The Summit at Haw River State Park, NC

During the Track I learning experience, participants will be asked to define and document a personal Leadership Point of View. New and future leaders will be guided to first understand what is important to them in leading people and then how they will consistently communicate and reinforce these performance expectations on a day-to-day basis.

Five types of leadership will be examined, including self-leadership, one-on-one leadership, team leadership, organizational leadership, and servant leadership. The primary focus of Track I will be on self-leadership (including the importance that self-awareness plays in leading others to a higher level of performance) and servant leadership (including the responsibilities of servant leaders to serve others as compared to self-serving leaders who serve only themselves).

Various assessment tools will be used during the Institute to help participants understand personal strengths, talents, and opportunities for improvement as they lead people and manage change. The results from these assessment tools will support development of both the Leadership Point of View and a Leadership in Action Plan. These “program deliverables” will support participants in transferring learning from the Leadership Institute to their day-to-day work environment.

The Track I learning experience will also include the active involvement and coaching of “Mentors.” Mentors are active or retired “legends” within the library community who will support program delivery, assist with small group learning exercises, coach participants in developing Leadership Points of View, and provide inspiration for professional development through the sharing of career experiences.

A set of professionally-designed and high-quality learning materials will be custom-developed and produced for up to 30 Track I participants to facilitate knowledge retention and learning transfer.
