Under general direction, the Head of Collection Services plans, organizes and directs the ordering, cataloging in Dewey, and processing of library materials and maintains the automated functions of the library system. This position supervises technical services activities and personnel. This position also provides some public service desk work and library and research instruction in online and/or face-to-face classes consisting of traditional and non-traditional students. The university offers a for-credit library course for each college. This is a twelve-month tenure-track position with faculty rank of Assistant Librarian. The position reports to the Library Director.

• Establishes, monitors, and evaluates overall program of service for Collection Services division. Responsible for planning and program development, management of cataloging, acquisitions, preservation and collection development
• Develops, implements and evaluates policies and procedures for Collection Services including the creative use of technology for technical services operations
• Work closely with the Director and key staff in overseeing the maintenance of the entire collection and establishing departmental priorities within general policy direction
• Responsible for the supervision of librarian and staff work as it relates to technical services operations
• Assist Library Director in evaluating and implementing the library’s materials budget including subscriptions
• Maintains statistics of technical services operations and prepare narrative and statistical reports
• Maintains an awareness of current library issues and trends affecting all library departments; reads professional literature and attends workshops
• Maintains inventory of department equipment and supplies
• Develops and maintains the library automation system and automated administrative functions, including coordinating with other departments to maintain the operations of the system
o Supervises the physical processing of all library materials for acquisition and withdrawal
o Supervises the cataloging and classification of all library materials using OCLC, MARC, TLC, and the Dewey Decimal Classification system, including some original cataloging. Maintain knowledge of current trends in professional cataloging rules and standards, RDA, and public library practices and procedures
o Resolve catalog problems and questions related to Collection Services
• In conjunction with the Administrative Assistant, maintain inventory of department equipment and supplies
• Provide reference services through various communication methods to on-campus and off-campus students and faculty and keep accurate counts
• Work with assigned departments and co-workers to enhance the library’s collections and act as a point of contact for assigned departments
• Work within teams and departments to recommend and assess new programs, policies, procedures and services for public services
• Actively develop and implement ideas for the promotion of the library to the university community including but not limited to programs, activities, and services
• Positively represent Athens State University in professional, community, and state organizations
• Actively participate in professional development and continuing education
• Assist in covering service points as needed
• Other duties as assigned

• Master’s degree in Library Science or recognized equivalent from an ALA-accredited program.
• At least three years of experience in collection services with general ILS administration
• Demonstrated supervisory skills of staff and librarians
• Demonstrated record of strong organizational, planning, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and implement those deemed appropriate for the community.


• Experience preferred in bid, purchase, and implementation of new ILS systems
• Experience in cataloging, acquisitions, preservation or collection development
• Knowledge of current copyright law related to libraries and higher education
• Exhibit strong broad-based knowledge of reference sources and services
• Knowledge of word processing and database software
• Familiarity with distance education library services
• Ability to understand, create, and follow oral and written instructions
• Evidence of strong service orientation as demonstrated by an ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and library personnel at all levels
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, other employees and general public
• Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision
• Ability to plan and direct activities and to supervise multiple employees simultaneously
• Ability to complete tasks within a specified time frame
• Exemplary oral and written communication skills and presentation skills

Located in historic Athens, Alabama, Athens State University offers junior and senior-level coursework to community college graduates and transfer students holding sufficient credits from other institutions. Presently, over 3,100 students have selected Athens State because of its neighborly environment where 50 majors and degree programs are offered with courses taught by a supportive and exceptional faculty.
