Position Objectives
The McDowell County Public Library System is looking for someone who is interested in current and emerging technology and its role within the library; has a passion for developing and promoting library services; and the proven ability to support and supervise staff.

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Performs professional and administrative duties assisting the Library Director in supervision of the library system. Primary duties include content management for the library’s website and social media, collecting statistics and creating monthly reports, coordinating outreach and community engagement, and working with the director on developing staff training. Responsible for the operation of the library in the absence of the director.

Duties and Responsibilities

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serves on the Library Management Team, and selects, trains, schedules, directs, and evaluates the duties and performance of selected staff.
  • Assists with general staff development and training.
  • Helps assess the value of services provided.
  • Collects statistics and contributes to monthly reports.
  • Manages and coordinates content on the library’s website and social media.
  • Evaluates and recommends procedures and policies.
  • Supervises the operation of the circulation department.
  • Serves as the primary liaison between the library and its computer service providers, including but not limited to, NC Cardinal, Conterra, OCLC, and Baker & Taylor.
  • Recommends equipment purchases, maintenance, and upgrades.
  • Assists in developing and implementing effective marketing of library services and resources.
  • Participates in collection management, selecting and deselecting library materials.
  • Develops grant proposals and may serve as project manager for selected grants.
  • Assists in the development of the library’s annual operating budget.
  • Performs reference services, assisting patrons in locating and using library resources.
  • Attends professional meetings and seminars to keep abreast of technological advances.
  • Advocates for the library by explaining services, programs, policies and procedures to the community at large
  • Responds promptly to complaints and/or compliments
  • Performs other duties as needed.

Minimum Requirements

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of library and information science and library organization, administration, and services;
  • knowledge of community characteristics and interests and of State Library and county government regulations;
  • ability to speak and write effectively;
  • ability to deal tactfully with public and staff; ability to instruct and supervise staff;
  • ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public, staff, community and government officials.
  • Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS).
  • Certification by the State Library of North Carolina
  • Public Library administrative experience.
  • Computer skill including Microsoft Office.
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license.
