THE DOCKET

Newsletter of the Documents Section of the North Carolina Library Association

    Volume 31 Number 1                                                                                                                                  Spring 2004

FROM THE CHAIR
With this issue of The Docket we welcome our new editor, Mike Van Fossen. We very much appreciate Mike's willingness to step up this particular plate (in addition to serving as the Documents' section Webmeister), and we are most grateful for the years of dedicated service of outgoing editor, Marilyn Schuster. Thank you, both.

The year past year has been an active one for the section. The Spring 2003 Workshop at McKimmon, "Taking the Pulse: a Day of Updates," featured an update on copyright and a panel discussion on government documents in the online catalog. Special appearances by Superintendent of Documents Judy Russell and retiring regional depository librarian Ridley Kessler made this a particularly memorable day. In November 2003 we sponsored a well-received program at the NCLA Biennial Conference in Winston-Salem. Libraries & Information in the Age of Terrorism" featured CIA analyst and University of Maryland professor Lee S. Strickland. The slides from Mr. Strickland's are available from the section's web page at, http://www.unc.edu/~mvanfos/ncla/wk.html

Vice-Chair/Chair Elect Beth L. Rowe has planned a fine Spring Workshop, for May 7, 2004 at the McKimmon Center in Raleigh. New, more complicated rental requirements instituted by McKimmon this year made this a real challenge! Our thanks go to Beth for her perseverance through this. She is also hard at work planning our participation in the upcoming combined SELA/NCLA Conference from November 9-13, 2004 in Charlotte. This event will take the place of our Fall Workshop, so do plan to join us. More info will be forthcoming as this event develops.

What's in a name? More than you think. For some time we have discussed as a section the possibility of changing our section name to better reflect the nature of documents work in the current environment. Suggestions included "Government Information Section" (rejected largely because the acronym GIS might be easily confused with the Geographic Information Systems) and the "winner" - Government Resources Section. This suggested new moniker will brought before the NCLA Executive Board at their April 16 meeting in Wilmington. A final vote will be taken by our section as per our by-laws, at our annual meeting - the business meeting following the workshop in Charlotte in November.

For those who have not had an opportunity to see it, there is a good article by Dave Durant in the Spring 2004 (Vol. 62 No. 1) issue of North Carolina Libraries on the Federal Depository Library Program. http://www.nclaonline.org/NCL

Lastly, we will soon be approaching the membership for nominations to serve as officers of the section. A number of you have served -- some more than once! -- for which we are all most grateful. The documents community in North Carolina is relatively small, but the section plays an important role in the vitality of that community. If you can see your way clear to serving as an officer or wish to suggest a potential nominee, or if you would just like to find out more about serving, please let us know.

See you on May 7!

---- Bryna Coonin, Chair

Numerous documents librarians attended the NC State Data Center Annual Meeting in Raleigh, April 22. The theme for this year's meeting was "Swifter, Higher, Stronger: Data Olympics." After the opening ceremonies and lighting of the "flame," participants were divided into teams. Each team went to 4 venues: Data decathlon, Demographics hurdles, Economics pole vaulting, and Geographic marathon. The teams answered data questions at each venue, using LINC, American Fact Finder, FedStats, Data Ferret, etc. Coaches at the venues included Michelle Hayslett and Cheryl McLean of the State Library. At the end of the day, each participant received a medal and the flame was extinguished. This was totally "hands on" and everyone I talked with thought it was a great learning experience. Documents librarians I spotted include Natalia Tuchina and Billy King from Forsyth County Public Library; Jack McGeachy and Karrie Peterson from NC State University; Beth L. Rowe and Jim Ovitt from UNC Chapel Hill; and Frank Barefoot from Greensboro Public Library.

NCSU LIBRARIES WIN MAJOR AWARD

The North Carolina State University Libraries is the 2004 recipient of the Thomson Gale Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Services awarded by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The award was given for the U.S. Congressional Bibliographies Web site, (http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/stacks/senatebibs/). "This resource offers a searchable database of House of Representatives and Senate committee meetings, and comprehensive enumerations of printed Senate hearing transcripts,” said Betty A. Gard, awards committee chair. “It strives to be an authoritative, exhaustive reference source of meetings held and documents released by the House of Representatives and Senate committees. The Web site is notable for simplifying complex, sometimes elusive, material and making it easy to locate.” Jack McGeachy, a longtime Documents Librarian, and now Social Science Librarian, started compiling and editing this as a bibliography in 1988. It was initially published as a print resource, then migrated online. He developed the site in collaboration with two members of the library systems staff, Shirley Rodgers and Sandra Logeson. Congratulations to Jack, Shirley, and Sandra!
