POSITION SUMMARY:
The Library Specialist III in Resource Services will perform copy cataloging of library materials; upgrade records found in OCLC; create and update holdings records; search, retrieve and update bibliographic records in the library catalog. Recommends and develops procedures and policies for internal department operations. May provide reference and research assistance for students, faculty, staff and community patrons.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Experience and Training
Bachelor’s degree, plus two years of library work experience requiring relevant skills and abilities. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability
· High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
· Proficiency in computer skills in Windows based environment, Microsoft Office applications and Internet applications.
· Demonstrated experience with automated library systems.
· Demonstrated experience with OCLC, MARC and LCSH cataloging standards
· Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively within a team environment and across all library departments.
· Ability to learn new software applications and adapt to changing technologies quickly.
· Flexibility in dealing with rush periods of service and changing procedures.
· Ability to work for extended periods at a computer workstation.
· Strong commitment to customer service, user satisfaction.
· Strong commitment to supporting the academic and research needs of students and faculty
· Excellent organizational skills.
Physical Requirements
Medium work. Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Subject to inside environmental and atmospheric conditions. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Library Specialist III positions may include any of the following:
· Performs copy cataloging of library monographs. Searches national bibliographic databases for received materials; locates cataloging information; verifies or edits imported pre-order and bibliographic records to comply with local standards.
· Updates and edits MARC records. Creates and inputs holdings detail to online library system including barcode, copy number, location information, enumerative/chronological information, coded holding statements in accordance with national library and local standards. Verifies catalog entries and resolves inaccuracies.
· Processes government documents in accordance with laws and rules governing the Federal Depository Library Program and the North Carolina state depository program; makes weeding decisions and coordinates weeding of government documents with University of North Carolina and other federal depositories.
· Recommends and develops procedures and policies for internal department operations.
· Hires, schedules, trains and supervises student assistants working in area of responsibility; may perform these duties for more than one department.
· Collects, compiles, organizes and submits data related to acquisition and use of library materials. Gathers and reports monthly statistics as appropriate.
· Participates in team and library activities.
· Participates in variety of library initiatives including but not limited to outreach, marketing and assessment.
· Serves on library and University committees.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervise, train, evaluate, provide work direction and problem solving assistance, and approve timesheets for up to5 student assistants.
AUTHORITY/ACCOUNTABILITY:
Works independently. Reports to Head of Cataloging and Music Librarian
Has authority and accountability for essential functions related to responsibilities.
PROBLEM SOLVING:
Problems that occur are almost always addressed with established policies and procedures.
