The William Madison Randall Library at The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) invites applications for a Government Information Specialist. Randall Library is one of 33 depository libraries in North Carolina assisting with the dissemination of government information and insuring free access to citizens. Randall Library became a federal depository library in 1965. The Library currently receives over 76% of federal depository items from the Government Printing Office (GPO) and other materials needed to support academic programs and community needs. Additionally, the Library has been a full depository for North Carolina documents since the state depository system was established in 1987.
UNCW is a member institution of the University of North Carolina, and is nationally recognized for its marine sciences teaching and research programs, and for its strengths in arts and sciences, business, education, and nursing. The University is situated on a beautiful arboretum campus located in an historic port city within five miles of the Atlantic Ocean. The University currently enrolls approximately 12,000 students.
Duties and Responsibilities: This library faculty position has three main areas of responsibility: the administration of both federal and state documents collections; public service functions; and collection management and maintenance functions.
Administrative functions include compliance with the requirements of the Federal Depository Library Program and the North Carolina State Publications Clearinghouse; compliance with the Depository Library Public Service Guidelines for Government Information in Electronic Formats; the development of appropriate public access policies; monitoring the condition of space, equipment and supplies needed to manage the collection; the supervision, training and evaluation of the support staff who work in the Government Documents unit; the maintenance of the Library’s government information Website and pages; and the maintenance of statistics of activity and preparation of the annual report and other reports requested by library administration or depository agencies. Public services functions include the assistance and education of information seekers, including students, faculty, staff and the general public, with a wide range of research interests; and the design, development and delivery (including promotion and assessment) of a suite of services to facilitate access and use of statistical, numeric, and geospatial information. Collection management and maintenance functions include the supervision of the acquisition, cataloging, processing, and stack maintenance of United States and North Carolina government documents through the depository systems of each level of government. Additionally, the Government Information Specialist serves at the Learning Commons Help Desk, assisting library users in finding information; participates in information literacy instruction; and serves as liaison librarian for the Department of Public and International Affairs.
Qualifications: Required: ALA-Accredited Master's degree in library or information science; a strong public service orientation; familiarity and interest in current public affairs; familiarity with the organization of government and publishing programs; knowledge of geographic information systems; knowledge of the policies and procedures of the United States and North Carolina government depository systems; knowledge of cataloging rules and procedures, including SuDoc Classification.
Preferred: collection management of electronic resources; knowledge of web design and emerging information and library technologies; strong electronic skills, specifically familiarly with spreadsheet and use of statistical information; effective interpersonal, project management, and oral/written communication skills; ability to work a schedule which includes some evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
Salary and Benefits: Salary commensurate with labor market for this position. 11-month contract with faculty status (lecturer, non-tenure track). Generous benefits package, including 22 days of vacation and 11 sick days.
