A WORD FROM NCLA PRESIDENT BEVERLEY GASS
Have I told you about my dachshund Nelson? He is as fine a dog as I have ever seen. He's obedient, handsome, smart, and provides me with unconditional love. Penny Robb held him in her lap when she flew down with him from Manhattan where he lived for the first couple of years before becoming mine. His first human mother died of cancer and his second human mother (or his first human grandmother depending on how you look at it) tried to make room for him in her life, but decided she wasn't doing right by Nelson. He moved to North Carolina the first day that Dave Fergusson held his NCLA board retreat or the day that I started watching what the president of NCLA really does. Nelson has been lots of help in my vice presidency and presidency. Mostly, he provides moral support and a reassuring presence as he sleeps (he used to sit) nearby while I whip out the wonderful written essays and reports that presidents of NCLA get to do now and again. He helps me deal with this more onerous part of being president. Occasionally he serves as a topic of conversation between me and past- NCLA-president Janet Freeman and even the State Librarian Sandy Cooper. Janet has a standard schnauzer named Bess who has been training Janet these last few months since she moved in with her. Sandy's hounds, the "Basset Boyz" Duncan and Zeke, are quite photogenic. She's shared pictures. I bet there are lots of NCLA dogs and cats and gerbils and canaries and who knows what else. Though I'd love to have you share your stories about these wonderful animals via NCLA-L, perhaps I'd better not. Congress would probably want to pass a law banning such if we did. As responsible librarians, we wouldn't want to be the source of filling the Internet with unimportant information. I was amused by a recent report that consumers should beware of the information about automobiles that they find on the Internet. Turns out that everything on the Internet may not always be reliable or accurate.
Well, duh….
So I'll ask instead that you share library/section/committee/roundtable
news and announcements via NCLA-L. If you have not already joined
NCLA-L, you can do so by sending an electronic mail message to
listserv@ils.unc.edu
do not enter anything in the subject line, and in the body of the message
type:
SUBSCRIBE NCLA-L yourfirstname yourlastname
To post a message to the list, address it to:
ncla-l@ils.unc.edu
And once you're on the list, send your
announcements and news out to 1,002 members of the library community of
North Carolina by the mere flick of your wrist.
--Beverley Gass, NCLA President

Library Administration and Management Section
You are invited to participate in a new LAMS Special Interest Group for Personnel and Staff Development Officers. This SIG has been established for library administrators and managers involved with or interested in various aspects of library personnel and staff development work. "Personnel" and "staff development" don't have to be in your title! Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, recruitment, employment, classification, compensation, orientation, evaluation, training, and staff development.
The goal of the LAMS SIG is to provide opportunities for sharing ideas, concerns, models, and solutions related to any aspect of personnel management or staff development in libraries. Venues for sharing include the NCLA listserv, LAMS newsletter, and NCLA E-news.
The Personnel and Staff Development Officers Special Interest Group has scheduled a lunch with round table discussions for the NCLA Biennial Conference in Winston-Salem. Mark your calendars now for Thursday, September 23, 1999 from 12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m. It will be a great way to network and share ideas!
We'll work to make the SIG meaningful,
helpful, and easy. All you need to do is be a member of NCLA and
LAMS. If you're interested in this SIG please contact Debbie Lambert,
Assistant Director for Administrative Services at Wake Forest University
(lamberdn@wfu.edu). Your suggestions are welcome too!
