Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary DisasterChildlike drawings are used
to give the added impression that this
is a story about an assignment written by a fifth grade girl. The girl, named
Sage, makes a mistake and gets made fun of by the other students. She recovers
from the embarrassment quite well as she uses that mistake as the idea for a
character in a parade. The class pictures, vocabulary, inserts, and vocabulary
sentences at the bottom of each page add to the fun and show that you can get a
lot of humor out of playing with words. Next stop, PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH, by Norman
Jester

Because of Winn Dixie
by Kate
DiCamillo
Who could have known that
finding a dog at the supermarket would change someone’s life? Named after the
supermarket in which he was found, Winn-Dixie opens doors for new friendships
and opportunities in a small southern town. Ten year old Opal has just moved to
Naomi, Florida with her father, the preacher and, because of Winn-Dixie, she is
able to make new friends, learn more about her mother and spend the summer collecting
memories about the unique characters in her new hometown. Read Because of Winn-Dixie and find out how a
mangy old dog changed the lives of the various people in this sleepy southern
town.
