Thinking about libraries and their fundamental significance to the citizenry
of North Carolina, the theme of the upcoming conference of the North Carolina
Library Association is
LIBRARIES
- A North Carolina Value
Enriching…Inclusive…Essential.
Winston-Salem
will be host city of this 55th biennial conference of the association, September
23-26, 2003. Featured speakers of the general sessions include Pulitzer Prize
winning journalist Rick Bragg, American Libraries columnist Walt Crawford,
and a panel of North Carolinian authors and poets. Last year's Friday afternoon
closing reception will be repeated with an appearance by Pulitzer Prize winner
Doug Marlette, creator of Kudzu, who will present a commissioned, signed cartoon
to the membership. Appreciation is expressed to our co-sponsors of these major
events: the Commission on the Future of Libraries and the Book, and the North
Carolina Center for the Book. A new feature this year will be library school
poster sessions planned to provide students opportunities to share their work.
The three days of sessions on a rich variety of topics are planned to enlighten
and foster professional networking among librarians. Confirmations include
the following: two pre-conferences; twenty-seven and twenty nine sessions
including breakfasts and lunches on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively;
twelve programs including three lunches on Friday. The Executive Board dinner
is Tuesday. Receptions are scheduled Wednesday and Thursday.
Conference and pre-registration materials will be mailed in July. Updates
and programs will soon be available at the conference website.
The committee will seek approval of the budget at the April 2003 meeting.
