Round Table on Ethnic and Minority Concerns
“Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History” Wednesday, Sept. 21, 3:45 ~ 4:45 pm
Join us for a look at a new library on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Stone Center's Library's collection gathers works on the African American experience, Africa, and the African Diaspora, with a focus on the social sciences and humanities. Ms. Raquel Von Cogell will share information about the history of the Center, services, and resources that are available.
“Reformistas/Change-Agents in the Carolinas” Wednesday, Sept. 21, 3:45 ~ 4:45 pm
Program/discussion/presentations on the Carolina Chapter of REFORMA, its formation, development, and place in the North Carolina library community. Accomplishments, goals & plans of this new organization will be covered.
“Recruitment and Retention of Library Science Students of Color” Thursday, Sept. 22, 11:00 ~ noon
This program will discuss results from a survey developed to identify concerns and suggest strategies to improve the recruitment and retention of students of color in the library schools located in North Carolina.
“Diversity Programming and Services in Our Library; the Place to Be” Friday, Sept. 23, 9:00 ~ 10:00am
Discuss various ways a library, as a place, can coordinate and collaborate with other organizations or units to host events/programs to promote diversity. Panelist will give examples to illustrate what libraries are doing to promote the awareness, appreciation, and acceptance of people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Topics include special funding, services, programming, committees, and collections.
“Hispanic Services at the Union County Public Library” Friday, Sept. 23, 10:45 ~ 11:45am
The program will outline the Hispanic Services program at the Union County Public Library. Library staff will discuss what has worked and what hasn't, and will describe methods used to provide a variety of services.
