This day-long pre-conference will focus on Readers' Advisory skills and strategies and will feature noted Readers' Advisory experts Nancy Pearl, Robert Burgin, and Duncan Smith. Cost includes all materials and lunch. The luncheon speaker will be North Carolina author Michael Parker. See participant information below for all the details on our speakers. Participants:
Duncan Smith is the creator and product manager of EBSCO Publishing's electronic reader's advisory resource, NoveList. He is a nationally recognized trainer in the area of Readers' Advisory services and the author of many articles on Readers' Advisory.

Robert Burgin is a Professor at North Carolina University's School of Library and Information Sciences. He has contributed articles to a number of books, including The Readers' Advisory Companion, which he co-edited with Kenneth Shearer and is the editor for the new book, Nonfiction Readers' Advisory.

Nancy Pearl is the former director of the Washington Center for the Book at the Seattle Public Library and the creator of the "One Book, One Community" phenomenon that is sweeping the country. She now writes, reviews books for both local and national publications, and speaks to library and community groups across the country. She reviews books regularly on NPR's Morning Edition and is the author of Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment, and Reason; More Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment, and Reason; Now Read This: A Guide to Mainstream Fiction, 1978 - 1998 and Now Read This II: A Guide to Mainstream Fiction, 1990-2001.

North Carolina author Michael Parker is the author of three novels - Hello Down There, Towns Without Rivers, and Virginia Lovers, as well as a collection of novellas and stories, The Geographical Cure, which won the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction. In 2004 he was awarded fiction fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. He has two books forthcoming from Algonquin Books - a novel, If You Want Me To Stay, and Novice Males, a collection of stories. He teaches courses in creative writing and literature at UNCG.

Frances Ashburn is the Director of the North Carolina Center for the Book at the State Library of North Carolina. The NC Center for the Book is a collaborative project of the community of the book to focus public interest on books, reading, libraries, literacy, print culture, and the literary heritage of the state. She has just been elected a Director-at Large for NCLA.
