Informed by their attendance at the 3rd Congress on Professional Education: ‘Focus on Library Support Staff,” this panel will discuss and entertain questions on issues in support staff certification, accreditation of library associate degree programs, library career ladders/lattices and other topics of interest to support staff and librarians.

Linda Hearn, NCLPA Chair
Ms. Hearn has worked as support staff in the Professional Center Library of Wake Forest University for 13 years. Prior to this, she served for 12 years as an assistant public library branch librarian. She is the current chair of the North Carolina Library Paraprofessional Association and has been an active member of the Association since 1991. Ms. Hearn was a 2003 delegate to COPE.Meralyn Meadows, Administrative Assistant, Stanley County Public Library
Meralyn has been the administrative assistant in the Stanly County Public Library in Albemarle, North Carolina for 20 years. She was the founding Member of the North Carolina Library Paraprofessional Association (NCLPA), the Paraprofessional Association Roundtable of SELA, and the Library Support Staff Interests Roundtable of ALA (LSSIRT). Meralyn served as a 2003 North Carolina delegate to COPE.Shirley Hamlet, Library Technical Assistant, NCSU Libraries
Ms. Hamlet has worked as a cataloger in the North Carolina State University Libraries for 20 years. She has served on the NCSU Libraries Staff Association and is presently serving as an elected member of the North Carolina State University Staff Senate. Ms. Hamlet is newly appointed to the NCSU Libraries Staff Learning and Development Committee, and she attended the 2003 Congress on Professional Education.Karen Letarte, Cataloging Dept. Assistant Head, NCSU Libraries
Ms. Letarte has worked in the NCSU Libraries for 2 years as assistant head of the cataloging department. Prior to coming to Raleigh, she served as an assistant professor and cataloger at the libraries of Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. Ms. Letarte has also worked as acting director of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin -Madison. She holds a B.A. in English and elementary education from Dartmouth College and an M.A. in library and information studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is currently chair of the Diversity Council of ALA's Committee on Diversity, and was on the COPE III (May 2003) Steering Committee.Alice Poffinberger, Manuscript Coll. Ms. Poffinberger is a Manuscript Collections Copy Cataloger and Archival Materials Processor in the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University. She has co-chaired the Perkins library system's Support Staff Council. In addition, she is a member-at-large on the
Steering Committee for the American Library Association's Support Staff Interests Round Table (LSSIRT). She chairs that group's Education Committee, and also serves on the ALA Committee on Education (COE). She attended COPE III in May 2003.
