This session will feature the work of the Glenwood Library as an ESL model for North Carolina libraries. Glenwood, a branch of the Greensboro Public Library, hosts a variety of ESL programs including a tutoring program, a computer-based language learning lab, small group instruction, conversation clubs, citizenship classes, family literacy classes, and tutoring programs for ESL children. The second part of the session will include a report of ESL services in libraries across North Carolina.
Speakers include:
*Gale Greenlee, Glenwood Library (Greensboro Public)
Ms Greenlee is the Multicultural Services Coordinator for the Greensboro
Public Library and directs the library’s adult ESL program. She holds a B. A.
in Journalism and Mass Communication and a Master’s Degree in Africana
Women’s Studies. She has a teacher’s certificate in Teaching
English to Speakers of Other Languages.
*Mary Dunn Siedow, an independent consultant,
works with adult literacy efforts and has experience with professional development,
technology applications, program management, research, and publications. Currently
she is working with the Equipped for the Future Reading Project to create professional
development materials that integrate evidence-based reading elements into the
EFF Read with Understanding standard in family literacy programs.
*Trish Bean, H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library
Ms Bean worked for many years in the Adult Basic Education Program in Tiffin,
OH and served as coordinator for the program. Also while in Ohio, she worked
with the library’s literacy program and is currently Literacy Coordinator
for the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library in Henderson
