Item 1
The CJCLS Executive Committee held its first meeting of 2004 on Friday, 2/13/2004. Consensus was reached on focusing on these items for the coming biennium.
Planning for the 2004 joint NCLA/SELA conference.
Publicizing the work of the section.
Continuing the gains made in increasing section membership in the previous
biennium.
Consensus reached that a longer version of the workshop would be offered at the 2003. Conference on the new SACS standards for libraries would be a useful offering for all academic librarians. This will be the section’s offering at the 2004 conference. The committee will attempt to secure Dr. Ralph Russell again, who made the presentation at the 2003 conference. Also planned will be a panel of community college LRC directors who have already been through the SACS accreditation process under the new standards. Purpose of this panel will be to have “veterans” of the process share their experience and expertise to all academic librarians.
The process of securing Dr. Russell has already begun. The committee would like to offer this workshop as one of the daylong pre-conference workshops. Inquiry has been made to the Conference Planning committee about this, but as of yet there has been no response from that body.
Item 2
The Committee composed and sent a communication to the directors/deans of community college LRCs statewide, asking that communication be forwarded to their staffs. The communication was reminder about the existence of the section and NCLA, and urging community and junior college library staff to consider joining and/or renewing their membership.
The Committee also decided to sponsor a contest for a new tagline/motto to be used in section communications and publications. The prize for the winning entry will be payment of the registration fee for this year’s NCLA/SELA conference. An email communication was sent to the section membership about this opportunity.
Item 3
Per the instruction of the Chair of the NCLA Executive Committee, the CJCLS Executive Committee created a section web page and announced it’s availability to the section membership on Monday, March 29, 2004. The URL for the web page is http://www.nclaonline.org/cjcls/index.html
Respectfully submitted,
Keith Burkhead, CJCLS Executive Committee Chair
