NCLA
PUBLIC LIBRARY SECTION QUARTERLY REPORT
January 2002
The PLS Executive Planning Council met at the Huntersville Public Library on November 30. Anne Marie Elkins was an invited guest representing the NC State Library.
While a slate of nominees had been accepted by the PLS Planning Council last summer, the ballots were never mailed by NCLA to the PLS membership. Until these ballots, which include space for write-in candidates, can be mailed and returned and the results certified, the slate of nominees (VP/Pres. Elect, Secretary, 2 Directors-at-Large) will be acting members of the Planning Council.
PLS Directors will spearhead the PLS membership drive in cooperation with NCLA.
PLS was pleased with its programs and with programs it helped to sponsor. It had a very good number of attendees at its Margaret Maron lunch, while the AudioVisual Committee deserves special mention for its handling of the Film Tour for the entire Convention. The Planning Council would like to see more vendors staying for longer than 1˝ days; concern was expressed about smaller Roundtables being hurt with current membership criteria: fewer people are joining more than their basic group.
After a lively discussion, the Executive Planning Council voted to support the conversion of NC Libraries into an electronic format with an annual print publication. The Council would like to revive its Reference subcommittee, perhaps through a link with the state’s Virtual Library group or NCLA’s RASS. PLS will cooperate in promoting a public library branch list-serve being put together by the State Library and is interested in forming a PLS Branch Library committee, as well as a PLS Website Committee.
The
AV committee now has a website: http://www.nclaonline.org/publibsec/avindex.htm
The Development/Awards Committee is revising its program with an interesting new sponsor; more later. PLS Executive Planning Council is interested in cooperating with Robert James in setting up regional workshops on public library preservation and disaster.
